Biometrics in the school-lunch line: have we gone over the edge?

In at least one school district --- in Maryland --- students no longer pay for lunch with money or credit cards.  Instead they submit to a palm scan.  Is this a privacy issue their parents should be concerned about?  Should parents have been informed in advance?
